YOUR MEASUREMENTS
Calculate rectangular volume
Length and width in feet. Depth in inches. Results update as you type.
1 Measure
Measure the rectangular project area in feet. Enter depth in inches.
Measure the distance along the project area in feet.
Measure across the project area in feet.
Enter the thickness of the rectangular volume in inches. This tool does not select a material depth.

UNDERSTAND THE VOLUME
How cubic yards are calculated
A cubic yard is a volume, not an area. For a rectangle, multiply length by width by depth, using compatible units. With length and width in feet and depth in inches:
Cubic feet = length × width × (depth ÷ 12)
Cubic yards = cubic feet ÷ 27
Worked example: 60 ft × 12 ft × 4 in
The footprint is 720 square feet. Four inches is one-third of a foot, so the volume is 240 cubic feet. Dividing by 27 gives 8.888… cubic yards, displayed as 8.89 yd³. The metric equivalent displays as 6.796 m³.
Cubic feet and cubic yards describe the same space
One cubic yard contains 27 cubic feet. Changing the display unit does not change how much space the project occupies. This tool keeps full precision internally; the displayed volume is rounded for readability.
When volume is not an order quantity
The result contains no extra allowance, loose-to-finished adjustment or supplier rounding. If you need to buy gravel, mulch or topsoil, use the matching planner below. It asks for the missing order information instead of treating this geometric volume as a purchase amount.
Method and limits
Enter positive measurements for one rectangle of uniform depth. Fractions such as 1/2 are accepted by the shared measurement parser. The displayed fields use fixed feet and inches; there is no unit switch that silently reinterprets your numbers. This calculator does not model irregular footprints, slopes, separate layers, weight or material behavior. Empty or invalid measurements remove the dependent volume.
