How we calculate

Measure → Calculate → Plan → Order is a decision sequence, not a promise that every detail is known. The Calculators hub separates volume-only, material-planning and geometry tools so you can choose the question that matches your project.

Geometry first, with units attached

Measured Volume comes from length × width × depth after unit conversion. Calculations retain internal precision through later steps; the shorter numbers shown on screen are for reading, not reused as calculation inputs. More decimal places do not make an uncertain measurement more accurate. Irregular areas and uneven depths need a suitable measurement plan.

Area-based planners measure the surfaces you enter and subtract only the openings or exclusions you specify. Product coverage, usable layout and package sizes remain separate facts. The Stair Calculator checks a proposed layout's geometry; supplied constraints are not a code approval. The Countertop Calculator measures sections but leaves slab layout and yield to the fabricator.

Two different planning decisions

Extra allowance adds an amount you explicitly choose for your plan. Loose-to-finished adjustment converts between material conditions using a factor you supply. One does not replace the other. Neither a universal adjustment nor a recommended depth is assumed from a material name.

Volume needed is not quantity purchased

Planning Volume includes only your selected adjustments. Purchase Quantity also needs the supplier’s selling increment; the planner rounds up to a whole increment so the calculated order covers that volume. Confirm minimum orders and selling terms with the supplier. Tons need appropriate density, and bags need published yield—neither is inferred from volume alone. Those routes are not offered by the current bulk-by-volume planners.

Numbers with a visible basis

CALCULATED identifies a result derived by the stated rules. PLANNING ESTIMATE identifies an explicit assumption. SUPPLIER-BASED and PRODUCT-SPECIFIC identify external information used; they do not mean we independently verified it. NEEDS INPUT and CHECK INPUT name missing or invalid dependencies. A blocked purchase or cost result does not erase a valid measured volume.

Costs and a useful record

No price is assumed. A zero price needs confirmation. Material Subtotal is separate from delivery, fees and Pre-tax Total; unknown amounts stay unknown, and taxes remain excluded. The Project Sheet brings together current quantities, assumptions, known costs and questions. Print it for your supplier; it is not a quote, reservation or order.

Sources and limits

Unit conversions use the international foot and inch. The Gravel methodology and sources links to NIST’s conversion reference and FHWA’s discussion of material properties. Those references support specific explanations; they do not endorse this platform or certify your project.

Confirm the material, intended depth, site conditions, supplier specifications and final charges before buying. Ask a qualified professional when structural performance, drainage, permits or safety depend on the design.
